Rigid is a folding chair which automatically unfolds.
The design of the chair draws inspiration from the concept of tensegrity, a structural principle coined by R. Buckminster Fuller. Tensegrity structures rely on a balance of compressed rods and tensioned cables to achieve exceptional stability while remaining lightweight. The folding mechanism, on the other hand, takes inspiration from the intuitive gesture of pop-up tents. The effortless motion of releasing an object and unfolding automatically is both practical and emotionally engaging.
The flexible central joint enables the chair to unfold automatically, minimizing user effort. The tensegrity-based frame ensures both strength and lightness. Four adjustable side straps provide structural tension for stability while also functioning as convenient shoulder straps, making the chair portable and ideal for outdoor use.
When folded, the chair is compact and lightweight, making it easy to transport. It can be carried comfortably using the integrated shoulder straps. Upon releasing the strap, the chair automatically unfolds. To achieve full rigidity, the four straps are tensioned by the user, locking the structure into a stable and supportive configuration. This process is intuitive and requires minimal effort, ensuring usability in outdoor contexts such as camping, festivals, or spontaneous gatherings.
