Upcycled furniture, Commission, July 2025, Italy.
This upcycled sidetable is made from an old beer crate and Alvar Aalto's IKEA stool legs. Inspired by outdoor seating solutions of local establishments. The unique shape of the Augustiner beer crate gives room for a lot of experimentation, especially in combination with Alvar Aaltos legs.
The Augustiner beer crate, specifically for the iconic Munich brewery (Augustiner-Bräu Wagner KG), is closely tied to the brand’s commitment to tradition, retro-styling, and, more recently, environmental sustainability. While the brewery dates back to 1328, the modern, widely recognized plastic crate represents a balance between historical branding and modern logistics.
Alvar Aalto’s iconic "L-leg," patented in 1933, revolutionized furniture design by creating a durable, bent-birch leg for the Artek Stool 60. IKEA’s Frösta stool, introduced later, was a direct, budget-friendly homage, adopting the same 90-degree birch leg design to make the stylish, stackable, and functional Nordic design accessible for mass production.
The Crate to Crate sidetable combines these two traditional pieces.
